School Gardens: A Place to Grow

There are many studies that suggest that school gardens and outdoor classrooms enhance student achievement. Students can increase awareness of their understanding of their own emotional intelligence through working together in a garden setting. Having a good knowledge base about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, school gardens can provide hands-on experiences for students and families to improve their attitudes toward cooking and eating healthy fresh fruits and vegetables.
Lighten Up Lancaster is working to identify needs, provide resources, and connect people interested in becoming involved in this initiative. For more information email us at coalition@lightenuplancaster.org.

We are pleased to announce that the Lancaster Heart and Vascular Institute at Lancaster General Health, through their My Heart, My Life sponsorship of the 2016 Lancaster Heart Walk, will be sponsoring another Teaching Garden Program at a school in Lancaster County…and that school could be yours!

We encourage you to review the attached application with your faculty team and parent leaders and apply for the opportunity to implement the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens Program. Please submit your application by January 15, 2016. Download your application here.
